20th century Tramp Art Frame
An early 20th century example of American folk art, exhibiting the cultural tradition of the tramps and hoboes who wandered through the country living by their wits. Using cigar box wood which was readily available since they could not be re-used, the artisan used a method called chip carving whereby a ?v? was cut into the wood and small sections were removed. Often many layers were glued together. The artisan would then trade his handiwork for food items. An antiqued mirror has been added to the frame seen here.
